Earthquake strikes in China near Kashmir border

BEIJING, Sept 12, 2006 (AFP) - An earthquake measuring 5.4 on the Richter scale struck in western China near the border with Kashmir early Tuesday, the government said.

The quake hit at 2:12 am (1812 GMT Monday) near Hotan city in the Xinjiang region, the China Earthquake Administration said on its website.

There were no immediate reports of casualties. And local officials contacted by AFP declined comment on the quake.

The US Geological Survey measured the quake at 5.3.
