Autumn arrives as the Atlantic door opens
Low pressure is going to take firm control of the weather through the UK and Ireland next week. I'm watching a deep area of low pressure developing to the south of Iceland, and this little fellow is going to be sending offshoots of itself eastwards, together with fronts bringing rain and strong winds for all. It is quite a fast moving situation, and so the timing of the forecast below may be out, but the overall detail seems acceptable.

Monday 18/9/06
A fair start to Monday for many eastern areas, in fact, eastern England may stay dry through daylight hours. To the west, a band of cloud and rain will be passing eastwards through Ireland and into the west of Scotland and western parts of Wales in the afternoon. This could be heavy at times. The evening sees the rain moving into northern England and the Midlands. Becoming windy in the west. Highs at 18 to 23C.
Tuesday 19/9/06
Rain only slowly clearing eastern areas, then a brighter day for all. There will be showers, the heaviest of these in the west, tending to affect western coasts of Wales and Scotland as well as Ireland. Some of the showers penetrating inland. I'm also a little concerned that rain could linger along southern coasts of England, but I will keep you updated on this. A breezy day for all, with a chance of some gales in northern Scotland. A cold day in the north at 10 to 14C, nearer 17 to 20C in the south, especially where sheltered from the winds.
Wednesday 20/9/06
A weak ridge may bring brighter weather to the east for a time. However, this not lasting long as strong winds and rain push into the west. Heavy rain is possible over Ireland and western Wales, as well as western England and, later, western Scotland. Winds to gale force in the west. Tops near 12 to 18C.
Thursday 21/9/06
Rain slowly clearing eastwards, then followed by sunshine and heavy showers. The heaviest of the showers always on western coasts, especially through Ireland, Wales and southwest England. Tops at 14 to 19C.
Friday 22/9/06
Little change. A disturbed day with periods of showers or rain. The most persistent of the rain through western parts of Ireland, England and Wales. Highs near 14 to 18C.
