A chance of a cold snap through the week

The highest confidence in the medium term forecast today is that the weather is going to be staying unsettled. There is a lot of cold air to the north of the UK at the moment and this is waiting to slip south. The question is when will the door be opened to the colder weather? Models are indicatiing that that may be in the coming week, although it probably won't last that long. For now I think it best to think of the temperatures falling next week, although by how much I'm not sure.

Monday 20/11/06
Low pressure is likely to be to the west of the country on Monday. A band of rain is likely to be in the west and this may well be pushing eastwards. It is likely to be windy with gusts to 30 or 40mph in the west. The rain is likely to be clearing north and east, with showers following to the west later. A coolish day at 4C in central Scotland, 10C in the far south.

Tuesday 21/11/06
There is a risk of a plunge of cold, wintry air moving through the UK and Ireland. Confidence is probably best described as moderate at the moment. If the cold air does come through then the day will be windy and showers, with the showers turning increasingly wintry with significant snowfall possible on the hills of Scotland, Northern Ireland and northern England. Highs near 2 to 4C in Scotland or Ireland, nearer 6C for much of England and 8C in the far southeast.

Wednesday 22/11/06
Confidence is very low in the forecast on Wednesday. What is likely is that the day will be unsettled with rain or showers. It could be chilly again through Scotland and Ireland, although England and Wales may see a rise in temperature. Highs at 3 to 6C in Scotland, nearer 7 to 11C in southern England. I would tend to lean towards the idea of the weather becoming milder and the colder air being push away.

Thursday 23/11/06
Low pressure may be over the country again through THursday. This could result in very unsettled and windy weather with heavy spells of rain or showers. Temperatures again cause a problem, overall I think they will be close to normal at 6 to 11C.

Friday 24/11/06
Cold air may again come back through the country. Staying unsettled in rain or showers, some of the showers wintry over the hills. Temperatures at 3 to 8C.
