It's looking better for Saturday...

Travellers hoping to get away from Heathrow will be pleased by the news that the visibility looks set to lift through Saturday. It will still be misty, but we should see a return to normal flying. And that is the case for much of southern England with the fog slowly lifting. Still fog through much of the Midlands and northern England.

By Christmas Eve most of the fog should have lifted into low cloud, leaving up with low cloud, drizzly and mist through to Christmas Day.

Fog thinning, but returning tonight

The great fog chase has begun! We are now trying to track areas of cloud and clear skies around England and Wales to assess where fog is going to be forming, and dispersing, during the afternoon and overnight. You can check out the current weather conditions for anywhere in the UK and Ireland by clicking here. The latest satellite picture nicely picks out the main fog areas; one being through Cheshire, Shropshire and parts of Warwickshire, others lying through the eastern Midlands and southern England.

So some places will become dry and bright this afternoon. Indeed, here in central Birmingham, we are now out of the fog and i glorious sunshine. I'd recommend that if you are planning to travel over England and Wales that you prepare for being fog bound.

Dense fog over much of England

Fog has become big news across the country, as predicted here on Weatheronline on Tuesday!

The question now is, when will it all end? Visibilities as I type are below 100m over a large part of the Midlands, eastern and southern England. You can view the latest visibility here.

I do have a suspicion that we may see a slight improvement Friday over southern England as cloud spills in off the North Sea. This may lift the fog and should raise visibility. However, what’s good for the goose is not for the gander, and it looks as if northern England may become more prone to fog problems.

And things stay similar into the weekend, so we may maintain the fog problems for a few days yet.
