US: A Mississippi levee broke Missouri town faces flooding seiten=2 abk=feature

CHICAGO, June 27, 2008 (AFP) - The US National Weather Service issued a flash flood warning Friday for a small rural town in Missouri after the corner of a Mississippi River levee broke. US television images showed a field submerged as water flowed through the breach. In its flood warning issued at 5:55 am Missouri time (1055 GMT), the weather service said it was unknown at what rate the water was moving and in what state the rest of the earthen levee was. But it warned that the water would "ultimately inundate" the eastern part of the town of Winfield, which has a population of around 875 people and is about 75 kilometers (47 miles) northwest of St Louis.
