A violent rainstorm that hit central and southern Chile has caused widespread flooding and mudslides. At least 13 people have died in the past two weeks and several remain missing because of torrential rains, snowstorm and gale-force wind. The capital of Santiago received about 120mm of rain in the 72 hour period ending Monday evening. Thus rainfall in Santiago since late Sunday was the highest ever recorded, authorities said, forcing local schools to close and flooding parts of the subway system. High waves and gale-force winds closed five of the nation's ports. The bad weather is expected to continue through Wednesday morning.
