AUCKLAND - A powerful new typhoon, Halong, has developed over Micronesia and is due to hit the US territory of Guam later Wednesday.
Last week Super Typhoon Chata'an devastated Chuuk atoll in the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM) and later the Philippines killing more than 50. According to the Honolulu-based Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC) Chata'an, considerably weakened and is due to hit Tokyo Thursday.
Halong started life as a tropical storm north of the FSM capital island, Pohnpei, and became a typhoon early Wednesday. Civil Defence authorities on Guam were on alert, expecting the worst impact at around 11pm (1300 GMT Wednesday).
