May 15 marks the start of the Eastern Pacific hurricane season which runs from May 15th through November 30th. Based on the long term averages the 2002 season might see 15 named storms and 9 hurricanes developing.

The first named storm of the year will be Alma, followed by Boris, Cristina, Douglas, Elida and Fausto. Named storms number seven to fifteen would be Genevieve, Hernan, Iselle, Julio, Kenna, Lowell, Marie, Norbert and Odile.
