Nearing Japan

TOKYO - Typhoon Halong, which killed 10 people over the weekend in the Philippines, was nearing Japan's southwestern main island of Kyushu, bringing strong winds and heavy rain. Packing winds of up to 126 kilometers (78 miles) per hour, the typhoon was located some 300 kilometers (186 miles) southwest of Kagoshima city, southern Kyushu, at 7:00 am (2200 GMT).

Halong was advancing on a north-northwest path at 25 kilometers (16 miles) per hour and the typhoon is expected to slam Kyushu island Monday afternoon and move northeast to target Japan's main island of Honshu. On Sunday, the typhoon grounded all 234 flights connecting Okinawa to major Japanese cities and its neighboring islets in the southern extreme of the Japanese archipelago. Typhoon Chata'an ravaged Japan with heavy rains Last week, killing five people.
