December outlook

December 2001 is likely to be characterised on the whole by conditions typical of late-autumn to early winter, temperatures and weather patterns fluctuating between mild and cloudy Atlantic air, interspersed with colder brighter and showery weather originating from the north and northwest. No major outbreak of continental air is anticipated during the period, and with winds originating mostly from a south to southwesterly point during the early part of the month, temperatures will be generally close to the seasonal December average.

It will at times be windy across northwestern districts of the UK with gales in places, however southern areas of England is likely to see a quieter spell of weather, with anticyclonic conditions for a short time just before mid-month. A return to unsettled weather looks likely mid-month, continuing through to the latter stages of December, when is may become quite disturbed for a time. Colder conditions will spread across all areas during the final week of the month, with any precipitation likely to be more of a wintry nature for a time, even over southern parts of England.

Early January is expected to open on a rather settled and cold note across southern parts of England, milder conditions are expected to establish across all areas soon after New Year.
