In the short-term, southern England and Wales will continue settled and dry, although a much more mobile and changeable regime is anticipated to be established through northwestern areas during the opening of the period, and this will extend southeast to all districts. Thereafter, through to the middle part of January a very unsettled period is indicated, wet and windy conditions are expected as low pressure systems move rapidly eastwards off the Atlantic. The exact tracks of these depressions will be crucial in determining the weather conditions across the country.
Colder for a time mid-month with a northerly plunge of cold Arctic air, thereafter, indications are that high pressure brings a return to settled weather through the latter stages of January, although at this stage it is not expected to be protracted. Changeable conditions likely through the early stages of February.
