A large and intense area of high pressure looks set to dominate the weather pattern over the United Kingdom and much of Northern Europe during the first half of this period. There will be a good deal of dry settled weather across the UK, although with the perennial winter problem of frost and fog. There will be subtle changes in the weather and wind flow pattern across the country as the centre of the anticyclone shifts its position.
There are strong indications that this high pressure area will drift southeastwards into the near continent, gradually turning less cold as winds turn more southerly in direction, loosing the chilly central continental influence. Just prior to the Christmas period a much milder and mobile Atlantic southwesterly air flow is expected to establish across all districts, Christmas itself expected to be rather unsettled, wet and windy in places but milder. Rather changeable into the New Year period with a west to northwest run of air through all areas, cooler conditions spreading southeast.
A rise in pressure is indicated through the early part of the New Year, with a return to frost and fog problems. An anticyclone is expected to establish to the south of the UK and should see winds coming in from the southwest through the early part of the month, turning generally westerly as low pressure crosses to the northwest.
