High pressure has dominated the weather pattern close to the UK during the last week, and looks set to remain crucial in determining the characteristics of the weather during the coming short-term period. The indications are that this intense anticyclone will shift its position to the west of the country during the early part of the week, the emphasis then being on a cold plunge of northerly air bringing a much more unsettled and showery theme to the weather, as low pressure becomes slow moving and complex for a time to the east of the over Scandinavia.
A continuation of chilly and unsettled conditions are indicated for the run-up to the Christmas period, although during the latter stages of the month a westerly change is likely, with much more mobile windy weather into the northwest. The early weeks of January point to a continuation of this westerly theme, with near normal temperatures and spells of wet and rather windy weather in places.
