Cc lenticularis

Cirrocumulus lenticularis are smooth elongated lens- or almond shaped clouds that form at the crests of otherwise invisible waves in the atmosphere. Cc lenticularis are characterized by sharp, well-defined boundaries.

Like their (much more frequent) lower cousins altocumulus lenticularis they form when a stable layer of air is forced upwards. Cc lenticularus are often very tenuous and may display some iridescence under favourable lighting conditions. True Cc lenticularis are very rare to observe. The clouds in this picture are Cc lenticularis undulatus.
