Much of Europe stays dry

Issued: 0530hrs Sunday 1st November 2015
Duty forecaster: Garry Nicholson

Some persistent fog central Europe

Sunday
High pressure remains in charge of the weather for much of Europe, centred around the Black Sea. However, low pressure brings strong winds to southern Spain, and an area of heavy rain and thunderstorms affects Andalucia and much of Portugal. A few showers in eastern Spain. Breezy across the Mediterranean. Further thundery rain around southern Italy. Dry but remaining very windy for Greece, the Aegean Sea and Turkey. Dry weather extends widely across central Europe as a whole. Southerly winds keep things very mild in France, temperatures around 19 to 22C. Variable low cloud and stubborn fog patches may locally persist for Germany and Poland, perhaps also eastern France. Low pressure north of Scandinavia brings mild south-westerly winds to Norway and Sweden. Rain affects the far north-west. The Baltic region stays dry but quite cloudy.

Monday
Heavy rain and thunderstorms sweep north and east across Spain overnight and into Monday daytime. Bursts of heavy rain also affect Portugal, where winds will be strong and gusty. Quite cool across Iberia. Thunderstorms may spread across the Pyrenees into south-west France later. Dry across Italy and the Balkans. The fresh breeze will continue for Greece and the Greek Islands, also Turkey, but it stays dry here. Dry weather dominates central and eastern Europe as high pressure remains in control. Feeling very warm in France, thanks to southerly winds, highs again topping 20C. Mild too for the Low Countries and Germany, although some low level fog patches may persist. Breezy across Scandinavia, but fairly mild. Rain will be frequent in northern Norway, but southern areas, plus Sweden and Finland stay mainly dry.
