After Thursday's snow and Friday's biting ice and frost, the weather is now set for a battle across the UK during Saturday and Sunday. Mild south-westerly winds are going to try and move in from the south-west, bringing with them outbreaks of rain. However, there's still a lot of cold air across the UK, and there is the potential for snow as these air-masses collide.
During Saturday, the rain is expected to arrive across most of Wales, Ireland and England, although northern England will stay dry. Apart from over the highest ground, snow is unlikely to fall although a few wet flakes cannot be ruled out in some of the heaviest bursts. However, during Saturday night and into Sunday, the rain is going to try and move northwards through northern England and Scotland. This is where we expect the fun to begin!
Several centimetres of snow are likely over the high ground of northern and north-east England on Saturday night, with snow at lower levels in central and eastern Scotland during Sunday. Quite how much snow falls will depend on the intensity and duration of the precipitation, but one thing is for sure, the cold air is not going to give up without a fight!
