Friday
An unsettled day to come on Friday. All places are going to be windy, with spells of rain for many. Scotland will be wet and windy with heavy periods of rain, and gusts to gale force. Later in the day the rain may turn more showery to the west. Over England and Wales bands of rain will be passing eastwards, the first clearing into the North Sea early in the afternoon. A second area of rain then follows from the west, this turning heavy with the winds gusting to 40mph. For Ireland there will be sunny spells and heavy showers in the afternoon, ahead of heavy rain into the southwest before dark. Highs at 9 to 12C but as high as 14C in the far southwest.
Friday night
A wet and windy night to come with heavy rain sweeping eastwards. The winds will be reaching gale force, with the strongest of these seemingly through Ireland, Scotland and northwest England. The heaviest of the rain through the Midlands and southeast England after midnight with showers following through Ireland and Scotland. The showers will be heavy and blustery with temperatures down to 7 to 9C.
Saturday
Rain may be slow to clear from the far southeast of England on Saturday morning, but once it has gone it should be a brighter day across much of England and eastern Wales. For western parts of Wales, England, Scotland and Ireland further showers are expected, and a few of these may be on the heavy side. Later on a period of more persistent rain could pass through southern Ireland, reaching southwest England by dark. Temperatures at 7C in the north, milder to the south at 12C.
New Years Eve
A dry start to the day for much of eastern Scotland and eastern England with some morning sunshine. However, the weather is set to turn more unsettled with gales in Scotland and Ireland, together with heavy rain. This will be spilling eastwards through all areas in the afternoon to be followed by blustery showers overnight. Of most concern though is the strength of the winds. A large area of severe gales, with gusts to 70mph could affect Scotland and northern England possibly damaging trees and disrupting New Year celebrations.
