This afternoon
Low pressure to the west of Scotland through today, this passing northeastwards. An area of gale force winds will be affecting most of Ireland, Wales, northern England and southern Scotland with gusts reaching 70mph and possibly bringing damage to some places. Heavy rain associated with the low will be affecting most northern and western areas. The rain through the rest of England and Scotland by dark, with squally showers then following into the west. Highs at 8C in Scotland, 12C in the far south of England.

Tonight
An area of damaging winds is likely to affect this evenings celebrations. The strongest winds will be passing through Northern Ireland, southern Scotland, northern England and the far north of Wales by midnight, then the strongest winds through eastern Scotland and northeast England around, and after midnight. Gusts could reach 80 or 90mph with damage being caused. Care should be taken. All parts of the UK will be windy with rain clearing southeast England. Heavy showers then follow to the north and west, with the winds slowly easing. Lows at 4 to 6C.

New Years Day
A colder day for Monday in a mix of sunshine and showers. The heaviest of the showers over western coastal areas although everywhere is at risk. The best of the weather over eastern parts of England. A breezy day everywhere and a warning over severe gales through Ireland, Scotland and northern England overnight. Highs at 3 to 7C.

Tuesday
A ridge of high pressure builds fro the Atlantic through Tuesday bringing a drier and brighter start to the day. There may be a morning frost in places too. However, the fair weather will not last as cloud and rain spill through Ireland and reaches western Scotland and western Wales by the evening. Highs near 6 to 11C.
