Wet and windy, severe gales Snow on Scottish hills seiten=4 abk=focus

Tuesday
A wet and windy day to come. Heavy periods of rain will be sweeping eastwards through the whole of the UK and Ireland. The heaviest of the rain will be through western Scotland, northern England and the west of Wales. The winds may be to gale force over Ireland, Wales and southern England.
The afternoon sees widespread gales over Ireland, England and Wales with gusts to 60mph in places. Rain is going to be heavy again, this time heaviest through Northern Ireland, southern Scotland and parts of northern England. The rain will be falling as snow over the hills of Scotland, with blizzards in places. As the afternoon progresses drier weather will be moving through Ireland and then into Wales and southwest England as well as the Midlands. Heavy showers moving into Ireland, but some bright or sunny spells coming through Wales and western England before dark. Temperatures at 3 to 5C in Scotland, but much milder to the south at 11 to 14C.

Tuesday night
Severe gales across England and Wales again through the evening with gusting winds to 70mph. There will be heavy rain through Scotland, with snow on the hills. To the south it will be staying windy with heavy showers affecting Scotland, Wales and western parts of England.
More persistent rain may return to North Ireland after midnight with further showers for Wales and southwest coasts of England. Elsewhere the showers may begin to fade away, and although staying windy it may become drier. Low temperatures at 4 to 7C.

Wednesday
An unsettle day through Scotland and becoming colder everywhere too. There will be some showers here, some of them wintry, perhaps with a band of more persistent wintry showers moving southwards through the day. A few bright spells coming through to the north, although always some showers around.
To the south it will become cooler through the day and will be remaining windy with early gales in eastern parts of England. There will be some showers around, most in the west and again a few could be heavy. Temperatures at 5C in Scotland, 9C in the far south of England.

Thursday
Low confidence in the forecast for Thursday, and one that needs to be watched carefully. There are some signals that a band of heavy rain and strong winds will cross Ireland, Wales and southern England. This could bring a cold and wet day to these places with a threat of the rain turning to sleet or snow, mainly over the high ground of central southern England and the Midlands, as well as Wales, but perhaps even to lower levels for a time. A much better day through Scotland, Northern Ireland and northern England with plenty of sunshine here. Highs near 2 to 5C for many, perhaps 10C along southern coasts.
