Gales & blizzards Gusts to 60mph or beyond in places seiten=4 abk=focus
Sunday
A bitterly cold day to come on Sunday with a north-westerly wind bringing an outbreak of Arctic air through the whole of the UK and Ireland. Windy everywhere too. If you are planning an outdoor activity during the coming days, check the forecast. Climbing and hill walking could be especially dangerous. Detail is hard to pick out, but let's have a go anyway!
A windy morning through England with scattered sleet and snow showers. These will be turning heavier in the north with blizzards over the Pennines later and gusts to 60mph. In the afternoon band of heavier snow showers passes southwards. It does seem as if this could move through western parts of the Midlands and into southwest England, perhaps giving a covering of snow through the evening.
For Wales a very windy day with widespread gales and gusts to 70mph. The snow showers becoming more frequent through the day and blizzards at times on the hills and mountains.
Scotland has the blizzards over the hills from the very start of the day. It will be windy with snow showers throughout, although a brighter spell may ensue early afternoon, ahead of more persistent snow returning to the northwest later.
Ire sees sunshine and snow showers. Most southern areas will be dry until evening, with the most frequent showers always to the north and west.
Temperatures will be rising to around 7C in southern England, nearer 2 to 3C in Scotland, but feeling bitterly cold everywhere in the wind.
Sunday night
A band of snow slips south through western Scotland and into northwest England and Ireland through the evening, bringing a covering to places and more blizzards on the hills. This band of snow then passes through Wales and southwest England as well as the Midlands through the second half of the night bringing a further risk of lying snow.
Further east there will be snow showers too, although these tending to be more scattered. Heavier snow showers in northern Scotland, again merging to more persistent rain at times. Staying very windy, especially in the west. Lows near -3C in northeast England under clearer skies and lighter winds, nearer 1C in southwest England.
Monday
Less windy for most on Monday but staying bitterly cold everywhere. There will be frequent snow showers pushing southwards through the country, with most of them affecting northern, western and eastern coastal regions. However, once again many will be making their way through the Cheshire gap into the Midlands, with a risk of snow showers just about anywhere. Severe gales again through northern Scotland, Shetland and Orkney. Very cold at just 1 to 5C.
Tuesday
Little change for Tuesday with more snow showers. The risk of more persistent snow through western Scotland, Wales, eastern Ireland and southwest England, perhaps with a significant covering in places. More snow showers down the eastern coasts too, and again these could be heavy. The snow showers more scattered elsewhere. A cold day at 1 to 6C.
