Rain turns to snow Chance of heavy falls seiten=4 abk=focus

Monday
A cloudy, windy and wet start to the morning for many parts of the country. There will be a band of heavier rain across Northern Ireland, northern England and the far south of Scotland. It could be that the rain falls as snow on the hills here, with a risk of some sleet, wet snow also developing even at lower levels. A further area of light rain extends south through the Irish Sea, Ireland and into Wales. This will be moderate for a time as it moves east into the Midlands through the morning. Much of southeast England will be dry, although cloud. The far north of Scotland will be coder, with lighter winds and rather cloudy.
Increasingly the rain turns to snow across southern Scotland and Northern England, giving several centimetres on high ground, and perhaps even at low levels as far south as Lancashire and Yorkshire. Note that there is the potential for some severe weather conditions due to snow over a wide area of northern England on Monday afternoon and evening. With the winds gusting to gale force there is also a threat of blizzard conditions. More rain to come for the rest of Northern England, again this on the heavy side, as the area of more persistent rain to the south moves into East Anglia and southern England. Drier conditions moving into Wales and western England late in the day. Northern Scotland and stays dry, but cold with lots of sunshine over the far north, Shetland and Orkney. High temperatures around just 1C in the far north of England and southern Scotland where snow falls, nearer 11C in southern England.

Monday Night
More snow falling across much of northern England in the evening giving a further several centimetres accumulation. Together with the snow will be a strong wind, which will reach gale force at times. Through the evening the snow moves through Linclnshire and the east Midlands, then on into East Anglia and possible southeast England through the early hours, before clearing into the North Sea and taking the strong winds with it. Clearer skies through Scotland, Wales and the rest of England will allow temperatures to fall quickly, with frost and ice becoming a problem. Low temperatures around 0 to -2C for most, but as low as -8C over the snow fields of northern England and Scotland.

Tuesday
After a frosty start to Tuesday morning for many, cloud will be increasing allowing temperatures to rise. Rain will be into Ireland and western Scotland by early morning, this spreading to Wales and western England rather quickly. The rain probably getting to all but the far southeast by evening. Most of the rain affects western Scotland, west Wales and Ireland, where it could be heavy for a time. Mainly light rain elsewhere. Temperatures around 4C at best where there is still snow on the ground, nearer 11C in southwest England.

Wednesday
Plenty of cloud around across most of the country and rather breezy too. There will be rain moving into Ireland and western Scotland, this becoming quite heavy for a time. Over more eastern and southern counties it should be drier, but even here there could be some outbreaks of rain. Temperatures rising to between 9 and 12C.
