Sledges at the ready Cold weather ahead seiten=4 abk=focus
Wednesday
A cold start to the morning over most of the country. Some morning icy patches on roads to watch out for, especially over eastern England and Scotland as well as parts of Wales. Those eastern coasts will have some showers and these will be turning increasingly wintry. An area of showers over the northwest and west of Wales too, although these tending to be scattered. For most of the rest of the country the morning is going to be bright and cold but dry. Into this afternoon little changes with the showers in northern and eastern Scotland as well as along eastern coasts of England falling as snow. The showers also turning to snow in Wales. A few snow showers for the north coasts of Northern Ireland, but dry for the rest of the country with sunny spells and feeling very cold. Highs at 1C over central Scotland and 8C in the far southwest of England.
Wednesday Night
An area of more persistent snow showers continues over northern and eastern Scotland, but this area slips southwards through northeast England in the second half of the night. There could be 2 or 3cm of lying snow in parts of Scotland and 1 to 2cm over the North York Moors by the morning. Scattered snow showers for northern and western Wales, an odd heavy one too. For all other areas the night is going to be cold, the northeast wind increasing but being felt particularly in the east. Lows of -1 to -4C although holding around freezing on the coasts.
Thursday
An area of persistent snow is likely to be affecting Northumberland, Tyne & Wear, Durham and Cumbria through this morning bringing 3 to 7cm of lying snow. This area of snow should fade through the morning, although could continue on northeastern coasts through the day. A further area of showers through the morning over East Anglia and into the East Midlands, these falling as snow at times. More showers affecting the far north of Scotland and one or two again over Wales. Elsewhere over the country it should be dry with sunny spells, although it is going to be feeling very cold everywhere in the brisk northeast wind. Highs of 0C in central Scotland, 5C in southern England.
Friday
On Friday an area of sleet and snow showers pushes south through northern England, the Midlands, Wales and East Anglia in the morning. This area of snow develops significantly into the evening, and it may be that we find an area of significant snow across southeast and southern England by late afternoon and into the evening. Further snow showers on eastern coasts of England and Scotland, more persistent snow on and off over northern Scotland. Some snow showers over north Wales and Northern Ireland, but plenty of sunshine and cold elsewhere where. Highs at 1 to 6C.
