Severe gales Rain spreads south seiten=4 abk=focus

Thursday
A fair start to Thursday morning for most of the country. There will be some good spells of sunshine around, the best of these through England and Wales. A breeze blowing across northern areas will become stronger through the morning, with some showers affecting western Scotland and western Ireland. This afternoon sees an area of low pressure passing close to northwest Scotland later. This pushes an area of heavy rain into the west of Scotland and western Ireland, the rain turning to heavy snow over the Highlands. Most of the rest of England and Wales will be dry with more sunshine, although there could be some spots of drizzle over more western and northern parts of Wales by dark. Widespread gales through Scotland and Ireland, windy elsewhere. Highs at 5C in northern Scotland, 10C in southern England.

Thursday Night
A windy night across the whole of the country with those winds in excess of severe gale force, gusts to 90mph could affect northern Scotland. An area of rain will be passing south through Scotland and Ireland, then into northern England and Wales, this becoming heavy at times and turning to snow on the hills. The rain eventually through the Midlands and East Anglia by the morning . More southern counties of England should stay dry until morning as squally showers move into northern western Scotland. Lows of 3 to 7C.

Friday
A very windy morning to come with severe gales through Ireland, Wales and England. There will be cloud and periods of rain here, the heaviest and most persistent of them over western coasts of Wales and Ireland. Cloud and some snow for western Scotland, although drier to the east. The afternoon sees the heaviest of the rain tracking north to be through northern parts of Ireland and Scotland in the afternoon, England and Wales seeing rain turn lighter and more patchy, with lots of drizzle and low cloud in the west. A few brighter spells to the east. Highs at 5 to 13C.

Saturday
Another windy one on Saturday for much of Ireland, Wales and England, the winds to severe gale force in the west. There will be cloud and periods of rain here too, most affecting western slopes and coasts. The area of rain slipping south during the day to be across southern counties of England in the afternoon. Snow showers for western Scotland, some heavy, but the east should be dry with sunny spells. Highs will be to 5C in northern Scotland, 10C in southern England.
