Cool, sunshine & scattered showers Rain spreads from west on Sunday seiten=4 abk=focus

Saturday
Bright with sunny spells during Saturday, the best of these in central, southern and eastern areas. A scattering of showers, likely to be most widespread in the morning, affecting northern and western coastal regions of Britain and Ireland, spreading inland, occasionally squally with hail and the odd rumble of thunder. Sleet and snow over the hills of Scotland and Wales too, locally falling to quite low levels in the Highlands. A few showers may move from the Irish Sea into the western Midlands. Feeling cool in the north-westerly breeze, with highs of 5 to 8C.

Saturday night
Any remaining showers will fade away, with most areas dry overnight. Skies clearing for many allowing temperatures to fall close to or below freezing. Winds falling light. A widespread frost is likely, with icy stretches after daytime showers. Clouds slowly thicken for Ireland and the west, allowing temperatures to lift. Rain begins to arrive in western Ireland by the end of the night. Overnight lows around 0 to -3C, lowest in rural spots, locally lower in Scottish glens.

Sunday
Fronts spread from the west, bringing heavy rain to Ireland and western Britain, setting in for many hours. Heaviest rain over western hills, with the risk of localised flooding. Patchy and drizzly rain pushing slowly eastwards, becoming increasingly persistent for the Midlands into the afternoon. Eastern England may well stay dry until after dark, with early sun giving way as high clouds thicken. Patchy rain and drizzle advances east during the evening. Wind freshening to gale force in exposed areas. Rain breaking up into showers by afternoon for Ireland. Expect high seas and big waves on western coasts of Britain and Ireland. Highs around 7C in the east, rising toward 10 or 11C in the west.

Monday
A deep area of low pressure is expected to lie just north-west of the British Isles bringing a windy and unsettled day. Heavy bursts of rain will affect north-western Britain and Ireland, turning wintry over the Scottish mountains, with some snow locally to low levels over the Highlands. Bands of showers spreading from west to east across southern Britain too. Eastern parts of England and Scotland will remain drier overall with the best chance for sunny spells. Very windy for all, with gales for Scotland, Northern Ireland and northern England, locally gusting over 60 to 70mph. Temperatures 4 or 5C in the north, 7 or 8C in the south.
