Heavy rain & gales in north-west Mild again, cooler Friday seiten=4 abk=focus
Wednesday
A strong south-westerly wind continues, up to gale force around Irish Sea coasts and hills. A slow moving frontal wave stretches west to east across Ireland and northern England, bringing prolonged heavy falls of rain, to Cumbria in particular, but also north Wales and south-west Scotland, giving a risk of further flooding. Largely dry elsewhere, but a lot of cloud. Staying very mild, highs 14 up to locally 17C to the east of the Pennines.
Wednesday night
Pulses of rain continue to affect Scotland overnight, but will ease away from most areas. Clouds breaking up gradually across England and Wales as weakening fronts move south-eastwards, and pressure briefly builds from the south-west. Winds easing a little, but across Scotland strong gusts may continue overnight. A cooler night than recently, lows 6 to 9C for many, perhaps locally below 5C in sheltered rural valleys of Wales and northern Britain.
Thursday
Low pressure to the north-west will deepen and push fronts across Ireland into western Scotland, with rain developing for these areas. Central & south-eastern Britain stays dry all day, with hazy sunshine at first giving way to thickening high level cloud. Winds increasing, later severe gales in west & north-western regions, threat gusts in excess 60 or 70mph for the north & west of Scotland into the evening and night. Mild again, highs 12 to 16C.
Friday
A weakening band of rain moves south-east early morning, local bursts of rain on a cold front. Gales up to 60 or 70mph in northern Britain at first, staying windy. Much colder air spreads from the north-west. Frequent heavy showers, hail and thunder will move quickly from west to east, merging into constant rain in the north-west, and falling as snow over the higher Scottish mountains. Some bright sunshine breaking through. Highs just 9 to 12C.
