Sunshine south & east Rain spreads into north-west seiten=4 abk=focus

Tuesday
A frosty start, but leading to a bright, sunny day for much of England & Wales. Fronts encroach into the north & west of the British Isles, and rain will gradually set in for Ireland & western Scotland. Some snow over the Highlands. High cloud will build across Wales & northern England, and patchy rain arrives in the west later. Southerly winds will freshen, soon gale force in the exposed north-west. Temperatures 5 to 8C, mildest in south-west.

Tuesday night
Rain extends further eastwards across Wales, northern England and into the West Midlands overnight, heaviest over western hills, but mostly small amounts for central areas. Breezy, touching gale force on exposed coasts. Eastern England stays dry but cloudy. Behind the main rain band, bursts of showery rain or hill snow are possible in the far north-west. A much milder night, lowest temperatures 2 to 5C, perhaps briefly lower in south-east.

Wednesday
A shallow trough of low pressure and slow moving front will extend across England & Wales, giving persistent rain to the west & north - snow over the Pennines & Border hills. The south-east may escape largely dry, but cloudy and cool. Behind the front, Ireland and much of Scotland will be brighter, with scattered wintry showers in the far north-west. Fairly light winds, but locally gusty near coasts. Daytime highs just 4 to 6C for most.

Thursday
A front across central & eastern Britain keeps things chilly and dull. A band of precipitation may linger for several hours across the Midlands, east & northern England. Some uncertainty, but this may fall as snow for several hours overnight and early morning, giving accumulations to quite low levels. Brighter in Scotland, Wales & the west, isolated showers in far north-west. Staying chilly where rain/snow lingers, highs 3 to 6C.
