May dominated by high pressure by second week
We currently believe that we can still have moderate confidence in the overall predicted pressure pattern, and that the overall trends remain basically accurate.
The middle of May will be crucial for the continued confidence in this forecast. We have for sometime indicated an increasingly unsettled end to April, and this also seems to be coming true.
We had also indicated that, after a depression tracked over the UK, pressure would build and then clear eastwards, before a north westerly flow settles in as a ridge of high pressure builds in. Moreover, we then indicated a more "uncertain" period around the beginning of May for a week or so before pressure builds through all areas. This is expected around the 12th to 15th onwards.
That "uncertain" spell may bring perhaps a generally unsettled spell in the beginning of may before high pressure builds to bring drier weather for the rest of May in most places, with only brief intrusions into southern England, Scotland and Northern Ireland.
