The Month Ahead
30 Day Outlook December

Cold and dry start, then milder for a while

Our current forecast patterns mirrors that of previous forecasts. Both it and the global models do at present run parallel, at least in their short term and do, in basic trends, indicate similar scenarios in the medium term. Thereafter confidence falls.

Initially high pressure will continue to influence conditions over southern areas, although a more zonal flow underway across northern Britain, will spread south to influence all districts by mid-month.

The middle of December is indicated to be rather changeable and mixed, with wind and rain concentrated over northern Britain at first, spreading south. Milder for a time across all areas as Atlantic influences predominate mid-month. However, there are continuing indications that just prior to Christmas colder weather will push through all areas,.

The period over Christmas is always tricky to judge, and this forecast pattern is no different as it does indicate that low pressure will attempt to push into the UK and Ireland, in the process displacing the colder air, possibly preceded by snow.

The end of December should see low pressure moving away, replaced by a developing anticyclone, which should settle conditions into the New Year.
