Chilly Christmas, but changeable overall..
The middle of December is often disturbed, the clash of air masses bringing wide variations in the weather conditions across the British isles. It is also often when the character of the coming winter is determined and the run up to the Christmas Holiday period this year is as ever uncertain.
On balance there is little likelihood of a fine and settled period, and the immediate outlook is unsettled. There is uncertainty at this stage as to whether the expected cold plunge of air will bring the odds of wintry weather any higher, as milder weather is expected to push through the UK just prior to Christmas.
The run up to 2005 is expected to se the unsettled weather slowly replaced by drier, more settled conditions into the first week of January. Unsettled weather will spread back through all districts into the new year. The middle of January should see dry and unsettled conditions, albeit much colder.
