London, the army had to help hospital staff in certain parts of Britain get to work Wednesday after heavy snow falls, officials said, warning of more icy weather to come.

Five army four-wheel-drive vehicles and their drivers along with soldiers from 1 Royal Gurkha Rifles rushed to help workers in the county of Kent, south east England, where blizzard conditions are worst.

Two other vehicles were on stand-by in case of an emergency, the Ministry of Defence said.

Britain's Highway Agency urged drivers across the country to stay at home unless they really had to venture outdoors in their cars.
