Incredible 520mm of rain (equivalent to 520 litres per metre squared) fell within 72 hours in the Locarno area, Switzerland. The heavy rain in central and southern Switzerland triggered widespread landslides and also forced the closure of roads in central and southern parts of Switzerland to traffic. The rail tunnel through the Gotthard pass reopened early Saturday but the road was still blocked after landslides cut off access late on Friday following two days of rainfall.
