Flooding and windy weather does not only trouble the UK, but many parts in Europe. For example, floodwaters reached record levels in Brittany and western France, surpassing the 1995 records. From last October to December more rain fell across Brittany than usually falls in a year. The precipitation diagram of Brest shows the increasing rainfall over the last 52 weeks. French environmentalists claim that soil sealing contributes to worse the problem. However, many local roads across the region remain blocked.
Belgium is on flood alert as well, as snowmelt in the central European uplands and extensive rainfall in the northern Alps, turning to snow only above 1800 m a.s.l. brought the Meuse River and its tributaries to swell over the weekend.
