Usually one of the busiest times of the year, the end of August has shown little activity for tropical storm development in the Atlantic and this season things remain unusually quiet. Ten years ago Hurricane Andrew devastated Florida during the same time of the year.
However, there is now a developing tropical wave that is producing showers and thunderstorms just off of the coast of Africa. In the eastern Pacific, hurricane Fausto is moving away from land areas. Winds are expected to increase to 125 mph this weekend.
In the northwestern Pacific typhoon Rusa has just launched, heading directly for Japan at present.
