Winter storms sweep Chile

SANTIAGO, (AFP) - Four people have died in strong winter storms that swept central and southern Chile over the weekend, authorities said Monday. An adult and a 10-year-old boy were found crushed to death by mudslides in their homes after heavy rains hit the port city of Valparaiso, 110 kilometers (69 miles) northwest of Santiago.

The other victims were two watchmen in Santiago who asphyxiated inside a metal shipping container in which they had lit a fire to protect themselves from the cold. Storms are expected to lose force Monday, but another wave of rain and strong winds is expected for Wednesday.
