Cold, and another frost tonight

Doesnt it feel more like arch than the month of May?

The reason is that high pressure is to the west of Ireland, and low pressure is centred over Norway. The result of the position of these two pressure systems is that cold northerly winds are blowing through the British isles and Ireland, and it was these that brought us such a chilly weekend.

Last night saw a widespread frost on the ground, from central Scotland to southern England. Even at Plymouth the temperature on the grass managed to get down to -3C by early this morning. An air frost was also recorded in some well sheltered areas such as Redhill Aerodrome in Surrey. You can check the lowest overnight temperatures here.

The northerly winds will be continuing to blow through today, bringing more cold air direct from the Arctic. As these winds ease tonight it seems that another frost is likely. The most severe of these through western Scotland, Wales, northwest England and the Midlands. We could see temperatures down to -1 to -3C in many places by Tuesday morning.

The good part of the forecast is that high pressure should be bringing plenty of sunshine, although a few showers may affect East Anglia.

By the end of the week we need to start thinking about the risk of some very strong winds in the south, but more about those tomorrow.

Whatever the weather keep the sun shining!
