Cold, heavy showers by Thursday

Springtime in the British Isles and Ireland often brings weeks when the weather swings from warm sunshine, to bitter rain, and sometimes sleet. The coming week is likely to be no exception.

After some mild conditions through southern parts of the country during the early part of this week, the air will be turning progressively colder across the north of Scotland, Ireland and northern England.

Wednesday sees heavy showers breaking out over western and northern parts of the country, these becoming increasingly wintry over the high ground of Scotland.

However, it is overnight into Thursday that conditions become more widely unsettled. There will be frequent, heavy showers for Scotland, Ireland, northern England and Wales, these spreading eastwards through the rest of England during the course of Thursday morning.

Sleet and snow will probably be confined to the high ground of Scotland, although other parts of the country may well see hail.

By Friday conditions should be improving, with sunshine, ahead of a more unsettled weekend.
