Heavy snow

It's a wintry morning over the British isles and Ireland, with four areas of heavier snow causing most concern.

The first is affecting the southern and eastern half of Scotland. Heavy snow is falling over a wide area, and this is also affecting the major cities. Falls of 5 to 10cm are possible in the next few hours. Blizzard conditions are likely. If you are planning to travel within this area do take care and prepare your care for winter travel.

Secondly a narrower band of snow extending over the west of Wales and into Devon and Cornwall. This is falling as rain on the coast but it is turning quickly to snow over high ground. Little change is expected in the next few hours so further accumulations are possible.

The third area is drifting down eastern coasts and is expected to affect coastal Lincolnshire and Norfolk, although accumulations should not be too great.

And finally a mass of snow showers for Ireland, drifting southwards in bands. These will bring accumulations of snow, perhaps up to 5cm in places with blizzard conditions in the heaviest showers. Whatever the weather, keep the sun shining!
