DUBAI, (AFP) - A rare summer rain storm which pounded coastal areas of the United Arab Emirates left five people injured and caused chaos on the roads, newspapers reported Wednesday. Four women were hurt in Sharjah on Tuesday when gusting winds overturned their car, Gulf News said. And a man was also injured when his vehicle flipped over in the same emirate.
The heaviest rain fell south of Dubai and worked was halted for safety reasons at the Jebel Ali container port until high winds subsided. Six inches of rain was reported standing on roads in the area. Winds blowing at more than 30 knots first whipped up a sand storm cutting visibilty ahead of the rain which sent temperatures plunging more than 10 Celsius from highs of 47°C (117 F). Trees were uprooted and traffic jams reported along the Dubai to Abu Dhabi highway.
