Hurricane Erin passed the Bermudas heading into the open Atlantic today. Erin is the fifth named tropical storm this hurricane season, but the first reaching the status of a hurricane. See a satellite image sequence of Hurricane Erin here.
Sustained wind speeds of 189 kph (120 mph) and peak winds up to 234 kph (145 mph) classify Erin to a Category 3 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson scale. At the moment Erin is heading towards north-northwest with a speed of about 20 kph (mph).
Although the storm is likely to weaken over the next few days the storm could still hit the Canadian Atlantic coast.
