Autumn Trying To Take Hold - Gradually Turning Unsettled.

Monday 08/09/03 to Tuesday 09/09/03
The transition from summer to autumn is currently causing problems for weather forecasters, with expected depressions failing to make inroads to eastern parts of the UK. Monday is no exception, with spells of heavy rain across Wales and south-west England during the morning, largely fizzling out as it reaches the Midlands and central-southern England by afternoon. Elsewhere, especially in the east some good sunny spells but a batch of heavy showers across north-west Scotland and Northern Ireland. Very windy in the west, so feeling cool here and overnight these winds may strengthen for a time. By Tuesday morning, much of the showery activity across the country will die away as a ridge of high pressure once more moves eastwards. Most parts will therefore have a dry day with sunny spells, although the odd shower is expected in the north. Pleasantly warm in the south, but feeling cool in the north with brink north-westerly winds.

Wednesday 10/09/03 to Thursday 11/09/03
Once again we're expecting to see unsettled weather begin an attempt to spread eastwards during Wednesday. Central and eastern parts will have a bright morning however, but across Ireland cloud and heavy rain will spread in during the morning, arriving in west Wales, south-west England and western Scotland by noon. Skies will become cloudy further east, but once again the rain is expected to become slow moving and fizzle out as it spreads across central parts overnight. However, into Thursday more weather fronts are expected to spread in across the south-west on fresh south-westerly winds. We currently expected these to provide the energy needed to spread rain to all parts, with eastern England seeing the first significant rainfall of September during Thursday evening. Northern parts will have a showery day with some sunny spells, but as the last week has proved current accuracy regarding depression progress across the UK is subject to change.

Friday 12/09/03 to Sunday 14/09/03
Unfortunately, due to the large uncertainties about the progress of weather fronts during Thursday, the weekend forecast does not have high confidence. However, we can safely say that it will be unsettled, particularly during Friday as fronts are expected to straddle central parts bringing outbreaks of rain, some heavy. Northern parts may again escape with sunshine and showers, but during Saturday further weather fronts will invade the north from the west. Southern parts are expected to become rather warm and humid during Saturday, but turning fresher from the north on Sunday as weather fronts retreat southwards. The best of any dry weather is expected in north-eastern parts, whereas western Ireland, Northern Ireland and western mainland regions will see the most unsettled conditions. More detail in the next forecast update.
