Monday 23/02/04 to Tuesday 24/02/04
After a frosty start on Monday morning, many places can expect a bright, crisp day with sunny spells. The best of the sunshine will be across England, Wales and parts of Ireland, although one or two wintry showers will affect the east coast of England for a time. Northern Ireland and Scotland will be rather more unsettled, with thicker cloud bringing outbreaks of rain in from the north-west. This is likely to turn to snow over the higher ground. Light winds in the south, but becoming fresh in the north. On Tuesday, northerly winds look set to make a return, behind a band of rain and sleet spreading southwards across England and Wales. Skies will brighten up across northern England, north Wales and Ireland during the afternoon, but with scattered wintry showers. The showers will be frequent across Scotland and Northern Ireland, turning increasingly to snow, with drifting likely over the Scottish mountains. Strong to gale force northerly winds here, moderate further south.
Wednesday 25/02/04 to Thursday 26/02/04
Wednesday looks like being very wintry across parts of Northern Ireland, Scotland and northern England, with frequent sleet and snow showers, or even long periods of snow. The strong northerly winds will give blizzards over the mountains, with drifting likely at some lower levels. Wales, Ireland and the rest of England will have some sunshine, but also some heavy showers, with hail and sleet likely. Most of the showers will be around coastal fringes, although some with filter through north Wales into the Midlands. On Thursday, conditions are set to deteriorate further in northern parts, with continued heavy snow showers giving significant accumulations in places. The snow showers will extend down the coasts of eastern England, as well as the coasts of Wales and south-west England. Central and southern parts of England, together with much of Ireland will have very few showers and sunny spells. Strong, bitterly cold northerly winds continuing.
Friday 27/02/04 to Saturday 28/02/04
This expected wintry spells shows no sign of letting up on Friday, with the cold north or north-easterly blast continuing. This will bring in yet more spells of snow or heavy snow showers, again mostly across Scotland and eastern England. There will be some sunshine, especially across southern and western parts, but it will feel bitingly cold everywhere. On Saturday, it will stay very cold, but the northerly wind should begin to turn more north-westerly. Sleet and snow showers will continue in northern and eastern parts, merging into longer spells of rain or sleet across Northern Ireland and Scotland later. The rest of England, Wales and Ireland will have a mostly dry day, with variable amounts of cloud and sunny spells after overnight frost. Please check back for further long-range updates.
